What email providers does Marco support?

How to Turn Off Gemini and AI Features in Gmail

The short answer

Gmail's AI is controlled by two separate settings, not one. To remove Gemini summaries and drafting, turn off smart features in Google Workspace. To also remove Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards, turn off smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Both live in Gmail's settings on a computer, and Google says the two work independently of each other.

Step 1: Turn off Google Workspace smart features

This is the setting behind Gemini in Gmail: asking Gemini to summarise emails, create drafts, and find information across your Google content. Google's help page lists it as a separate control from Gmail's own smart features.

On your computer, open Gmail.
Click the Settings gear at the top right, then click See all settings.
In the General tab, scroll to Google Workspace smart features.
Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace. You can turn off Smart features in other Google products in the same place.
Click Save.

Step 2: Turn off smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet

This second setting controls the features that read your mail inside Gmail itself.

In Gmail, click the Settings gear, then See all settings.
In the General tab, scroll to Smart features.
Untick Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.

According to Google, switching this off removes:

Automatic inbox categories (Primary, Social, Promotions)
Smart Compose, the suggested text as you type
Smart Reply, the suggested quick replies
Summary cards above emails, such as travel and package tracking

That trade-off is real. If you rely on inbox tabs, you lose them with this setting.

What stays on

Google notes that some features have their own switches and remain available after this setting is off, such as conversation summaries and Smart Reply in Google Chat. Your choice applies on every device where you are signed in to that account, although Google warns that some changes made on a computer do not show up in the mobile app.

If you are in the UK or EU

Google says smart feature settings are off by default for people in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. If you are there, you may already be set. It is still worth checking in case you turned them on at some point.

Work and school accounts

Gemini access on a work or school account depends on your organisation's Google Workspace plan. If the settings above look different or are missing, ask your administrator.

If you want an inbox with no AI at all

Settings reduce what an email app does with your mail, but the features ship switched on and new ones arrive with updates. Marco is an email client that does not generate, rewrite, summarise, or reply to email with AI. It works with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, and any IMAP provider, so you keep your address and leave the AI layer behind.
